Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood according to the American Red Cross. That translates into 38,000 blood donations needed per day. Only 1 in 3 Americans are eligible to donate blood. And only 3 out of every 100 actually do. A single pint of whole blood can save up to three lives by providing valuable red cells, platelets, plasma and cryoprecipitate. Blood expires. The red blood cells, which are used for anemia, last 42 days in storage. Those are the oxygen carrying cells. If a patient needs platelets, which are the cells, which cause clotting, the product only lasts a maximum of 7 days in storage. However, plasma, which excludes cells but contains factors, which help also help blood clot, can be frozen for a longer time and stored for a year. Historically, traffic accidents always rise on holiday weekends like Memorial Day. That increases the need for ample blood supplies to help save the lives of accident victims. In addition to accident and disaster victims, cancer survivors undergoing chemotherapy treatments often require blood transfusions. More than 1 million new people are diagnosed with cancer each year. Donating blood is quick and easy. The entire process from registration to post-donation refreshments takes less than 1 hour. And you’ll be on your way, knowing you’ve given the gift of life to someone who needs it. Typically, you can donate blood every 2 months.
